OECD Inflation Ticked Up. Device Theft Did Not Take the Month Off.

Prices moved up again in the OECD's October release. A stolen device is still a data problem first and a purchasing problem second.

On October 6, 2026, the OECD reported that year-on-year inflation in the OECD area rose to 4.3 percent in August, from 4.1 percent in July. Headline inflation increased in 23 OECD countries, was stable or broadly stable in 12, and declined in 3. Energy inflation jumped. The IMF had already said, in July, that global headline inflation was expected to rise from 4.1 percent in 2025 to 4.7 percent in 2026.

Put that next to a theft finding that has not expired: in Kensington's March 2025 survey, 76 percent of 1,000 IT decision-makers in the US and Europe said their organization had experienced device theft in the previous two years. Inflation does not cause theft. It does raise the pain of replacing what was taken, and it does nothing to remove the files on the device that is already gone.

Do this in the next 30 days

  • Enroll the laptops and phones that leave the office. If you cannot wipe it, do not let it hold customer, patient, or student data.
  • Name an on-call admin for nights and weekends. Lock before the weekend is the standard.
  • Separate replacement purchasing from the wipe. Memory prices, from the July export readings through the June contract projection, are a finance problem. The missing disk is a today problem.
  • Quote primary sources in the board note. OECD for 4.3 percent. Kensington for the 76 percent survey. HHS if you are also carrying the Change Healthcare figure of about 192.7 million.

Spearstone builds DriveStrike for that today problem: remote wipe across enrolled drives, remote lock, and locate. It will not move an inflation print. It will give you a way to destroy the local copy when a device does not come home. Start a trial or contact Spearstone and put the devices you already pay for under a control you can use tonight.

Questions worth answering directly

What did the OECD report on October 6, 2026?

Year-on-year CPI inflation in the OECD rose to 4.3 percent in August 2026, from 4.1 percent in July. It increased in 23 member countries.

What should a company do about device theft while prices are rising?

Enroll and encrypt the devices that leave your control, staff a same-day lock or wipe, and treat replacement cost as a separate purchasing issue. Higher prices make delay more expensive. They do not make the data safer.
