A 2025 Survey Found Device Theft at 76% of the IT Teams Asked

Seventy-six percent is not a prediction. It is what 1,000 IT decision-makers said had already happened.

In April 2025, Kensington published a survey of 1,000 IT and IT-security decision-makers in the United States and Europe. Seventy-six percent said their organization had experienced device theft in the previous two years. The study was taken in March 2025.

That is a prevalence finding among the people surveyed, not a census of every business. It is still hard to wave away. If three out of four teams like the ones Kensington asked have already lost hardware to theft, a security program with no wipe path is betting it will be in the other quarter.

Theft is an operations event

The devices in that study are the same objects DriveStrike is built to reach: laptops and other endpoints that leave controlled rooms. Remote wipe, remote lock, and locate matter after the theft, when the disk still holds mail, tokens, and files. Physical locks and cable kits matter before it. Neither replaces the other. A cable does not help the laptop already in a car. A wipe does not deter the person who has not taken it yet.

Pair the survey with the first-hour checklist in the April article. If your own last two years are quieter than 76%, good. Write down why, and test that the quiet is not just missing tickets.

Ask your own 1,000-person question, scaled down

  • How many devices were reported lost or stolen in the last 24 months?
  • How many of those were wiped or confirmed encrypted with a key the finder does not have?
  • How many were never enrolled, so the honest answer is "we do not know"?

DriveStrike is Spearstone's answer to the enrolled population. Start a trial or contact Spearstone to put a number on the ones you can actually reach.
